    Parks & Transportation Summer Student (Full-time/Term)

    The City of Wetaskiwin is seeking summer students to support both Parks and Transportation on our Public Works teams during the 2021 spring/summer season (April-August).

    • The Parks position is responsible for the beautification and maintenance of floral areas, parks, open spaces, cemeteries, playgrounds, and downtown streetscapes.
    • The Transportation position is responsible to assist with the maintenance and repair of all City roadways, drainage systems, sidewalks and signs.

    • Provide excellent customer service.
    • Collect garbage/recyclables from City-operated parks and facilities.
    • Clean and carry out minor repairs to shops, yards, parks, tools, equipment, buildings and contents and machines.
    • Maintain outdoor sidewalks and pathways.
    • Assist in cemetery lawn maintenance and general clean up.
    • Assist in pruning and bucking trees.
    • Weed, water, fertilize, seed, install turf, and other maintenance.
    • Operate equipment such as self-propelled and/or self-riding lawn mowers.
    • Work outdoors and on feet for extended periods.
    • Lift and move medium weight objects 10 to 30 pounds and on occasion up to 45 pounds.
    • Additional duties and special projects as required.

    • Provide excellent customer service.
    • Repair and construction of streets, curbs and sidewalks.
    • Cleaning and maintenance of storm drainage.
    • Perform vegetation brushing, ditching & grass cutting.
    • Clean and complete minor repairs to machinery and equipment.
    • Operate small equipment.
    • Complete storm drainage cleaning & maintenance.
    • Follow all City of Wetaskiwin health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
    • Ensure public safety while flagging or performing other duties around traffic and work sites.
    • Additional duties and special projects as required.

    Education and Qualifications
    • 15-30 years of age.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Ability of perform all functions of the job and can lift up to 45 pounds.
    • Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time under all weather conditions.
    • Ability to stand for long periods of time on a variety of surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, turf, etc.
    • Can operate small equipment with experience using common hand tools (e.g. shovel, pick, rake, pulaski, tamping bar, axe, hatchet, machete, handsaw, loppers, pruning shears, power washer, hand vacuum, and hand buffer).
